Former Assistant Editor of the Punch Newspaper, Nike Popoola has emerged the overall winner for the 9th edition of the Pan African ReInsurance Journalism Awards.
She was announced at the 2024 award ceremony which coincides with the awarding organisation, Continental Reinsurance’s annual CEO Summit held April 12 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
According to a statement released by the organisers after the event, “Nike Popoola, Nigeria’s Punch Newspaper reporter emerged as the overall winner for the 2024 awards and has received a cash prize of USD 2,000 for her exemplary print story titled “After mobile phone adoption challenges, underwriters break barriers with innovations.”
“This insightful piece sheds light on how insurance companies have successfully navigated challenges in mobile phone adoption and are now making significant strides in growth.”
Popoola was among the winners selected from among 121 entrants from across Africa this year for the different categories of the award.
A business editor with KTN in Kenya, Peter Wakaba, won the English Broadcast Category, Nike Popoola also clinched the English Online Category, and the English Print category award went to Bbalewa Zyuulu of Scoop Newspaper Zambia.
Mahamadi Sebogo a journalist with Sidwala, from Burkina Faso, won in the French category while Islam Abdelhameed Abdelmutlib Farahat was awarded the top prize in the Arabic category.
Submissions spanned 18 African countries, encompassing francophone, anglophone, and Arabic-speaking nations, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
In addition to the overall winner, category champions, 1st and 2nd Runners-Up in English, French, and Arabic categories have been honoured with cash prizes of USD 1,500, USD 1,000, and USD 500 respectively, along with trophies, in recognition of their outstanding submissions.
Destiny Onyemihia of Voice of Nigeria was 1st Runners-up, and Afeez Hanafi of Daily Trust was 2nd Runners-up in the English broadcast and English online categories respectively.
