Betty Abah, a journalist and writer has reiterated that poor reading culture in Nigeria has more to do with the invasion of technology.
In an interview with Vanguard newspaper, the reality is that people spend more time watching television, or lazing around the internet especially on social media, whiling away time rather than reading serious books which could be of benefit.
“Also, government and relevant institutions haven’t done enough to promote reading with the wide-spread ‘expo’ and institutions where grades can easily be bought and where mediocre characters become politicians who dictate our lives, is really depressing and do not encourage the spirit of scholarship,” Abah said.
Abah stressed that if reading culture is not been practised then it means young people are not ready to keep up with it, rather than be a laughing stock of the world due to the lack of intellectual depth the nation’s public officials.
“We must do something about the reading culture in Nigeria. I think that a number of incentives especially headed by government and private institutions, especially targeted at young people can help revive the reading culture,” she said .
