Nigerian journalist, Donatus needs N12m for kidney surgery

Donatus Duru, (54), Chairman, Editorial Board, Independent News­papers, Lagos, has been hospitalized at the Gbagada General Hospital, Lagos. He was diagnosed with kidney infection and need N12million to carry out a transplant.

The family is calling on public-spirited individuals and cooperate bodies for financial support for the ailing journalist.

Duru is on renal treatment and currently on dialysis at the Gbagada General Hospital, Gbagada, Lagos.

Mrs. Stella Chima Duru, lamented that her hus­band had been battling with kidney failure among other co-existing diseases including comorbidities, hypertension and hyperlipidemia.

She shared a photo of her husband in a hospital bed and wrote that his kidneys failed him and he’s looking for help.

Mrs. Duru lamented that her family can no longer cope with her husband’s medical bills. She said an average di­alysis cost about N40, 000 per session which translates to N180, 000 per week, inclusive of procedures, investigations, medications, and dialysis proper.

While thanking the management of Independent Newspaper for their unwav­ering support since Duru was diagnosed of kidney disease in 2019, she bemoaned the cost of managing his condition which has now deteriorated.

In an emotion-laden voice, she said, “My husband would soon undergo another dialysis on Wednesday and would need blood booster and blood trans­fusion, among other things.”

A letter signed by Dr. A.A. Busari, Consultant Nephrol­ogist For: Medical Director/ CEO, General Hospital, Gbaga­da, dated August 5, 2021 and ad­dressed to Daily Independent, confirmed Mr. Duru’s ailing condition.

The letter partly reads, “Re: Duru Donatus (M/54 Yrs), Hos­pital Number: 372497, Medical Report. The above is a known patient of the Nephrology unit who was initially admitted in 2019 and was initially man­aged as a case of Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease.

“He was subsequently placed on twice-weekly Hemo­dialysis and other nephrology care. His condition has, how­ever, deteriorated into End Stage Renal Disease and he will require a renal transplant. Kindly render all necessary as­sistance.”

The once ebullient Editorial Board Chairman, who is celebrated for regularly leading his dynamic team of eminent and experienced writers in churning out in­cisive and powerful editorial content, his own way of con­tributing to a better Nigeria, is now currently struggling with the disabling critical disease, needing over N12 million for transplant and post-surgery treatment.

Making a passionate ap­peal, his wife said, “It is with utmost humility and respect that I, on behalf of my family, solicit your kind intervention and assistance in raising N12 million to facilitate the sur­gery. Cheques are payable to his account with the following details:
