News Verifier Africa, a Factcheck organisation in Nigeria, has adopted inclusive approaches and policies specifically for those with hearing and visual impairment for its website re-launched on August 25, 2023.
The new website was presented at a virtual session during which various speakers commended News Verifier Africa for the idea which addresses the crucial issue of making fact checks more accessible and inclusive.
The website is one of the outcomes of the 10-week solution challenge aimed at addressing one of the field’s urgent questions: How To Build Trust In News under the 2022 International Center For Journalists (ICFJ) Leap Innovation Lab.
According to the Co-founder of the organisation, Olakunle Mohammed, the idea behind the Facts Inclusive Project was to build an information dissemination tool for people with hearing and visual impairment.
He said the use of videos that include sign language and animation is to make them easy to consume and to optimize the user experience on the website with text-to-audio plugins, accessibility features, and voiceover technology.
