Journalists and media organizations in Nigeria have been advised to maximize training opportunities and resources by media Non-Governmental Organizations and institutions.
The Executive Director of Media Career Development Network (MCDN), Lekan Otufodunrin offered the advice in the Nigeria Media Capacity Development Report 2021 which contains details of the various projects, programmes and activities of media NGOs in Nigeria last year.
“While some journalists have continued to utilize the training opportunities and resources, many more journalists and media organizations, especially beyond major cities, still need to know how to utilize them to enhance their careers and operations,” Otufodunrin stated in the Introduction to the report.
According to him, there is a need for media organizations to collaborate with media NGOs to organize in-house training on key areas of need for their staff in view of their limited resources.
“ They should be willing to grant their staff permission to fully participate in training and fellowships which will enhance their capacity. Without regular training, journalists will be unable to meet the demands of contemporary journalism practice which will determine the survival of media organisations.
“Individual journalists should also appreciate the need to update their skills to make themselves suitable for emerging job roles in the changing media landscape, Otufodunrin stated.
He said lecturers in media training institutions and their students will also find the report very useful to access more practical and contemporary training beyond the academic environment, adding that they will also find useful publications for some of the courses offered.

Apart from the programmes of the media NGOs, he said the report has a database of all necessary contact details for interested journalists and key insightful excerpts from major interviews with top journalists in Nigeria and the continent.
Otufodunrin commended the media groups featured in the reports and others for the seminars, workshops and roundtables on various aspects of media coverage and the required skills they organised to enhance the capacity of journalists.
He also commended local and international organisations that funded the various training and urged them not to sustain their support to enhance the capacity of journalists and the operations of media organisations in Nigeria.
