‘It’s not easy being a woman journalist’

The International Women Media Foundation (IWMF) has applauded practising women journalist for their resilience despite the various challenges they have to cope with.

In a publication on 19 women changing journalism in 2019, noted that “it is not easy being a woman journalist”

Nearly one-third of early-career journalists according to the foundation considered leaving the profession due to attacks and harassment.

The 19 women who changed the tide of journalism in 2019 are as follows:

“Ana Maria Rodriguez and Eulimar Nunez, The multimedia journalists merging technology and immersive storytelling. Tara Gatewood, The journalist breaking barriers for indigenous voices; Erika Schultz & Corine Chin The visual storytellers whose work lasts beyond the shot, Sarah Conway Aqilah Allaudeen, The team shedding light on asylum seekers’ stories.”

Others are: Eulien Guo, The freelancer who changed the narrative on wildlife trafficking, Shola Lawal, The young voice changing journalism in Africa, Karen Coates and Valeria Fernandez, The investigators elevating children’s voices, Jasmine Brown, The reporter working to challenge the status quo.

“Jill Filipovic and Nichols Sobecki, The journalists persisting to tell women’s truths; Kareem Imam, Multimedia journalist making wikipedia equitable; Julia Gavarette and Heather Gres,  The storytellers giving a human face to the big issues, Victoria Moll-Ramirez Journalist fighting for more Latin representation in the industry,” IWMF stated.

Founded in 1990, IWMF is a vibrant global network dedicated to strengthening the role of women in the news worldwide as a means to increase freedom of speech throughout the different media.
