With thousands of Nigerian graduates seeking non-existing white-collar jobs, students of the Department of Mass Communication, Caleb University (CU), Imota, Lagos, have been advised to dream of being job creators rather than job seekers by embracing Entrepreneurship.
This advice was given recently, by the Creative Director, of Smart Brands Innovative Media Services, Mr. Yinka Padonu, during the institution’s 3rd Media Clinic which was held this November at the school’s Multipurpose Auditorium.
The media expert who spoke on the theme, “Steps to Media Entrepreneurship” told the students that the only way they can hedge against unemployment is to develop entrepreneurial skills around the course of their learning.
Padonu who also spoke at Covenant University last year, emphasized the need for all undergraduates to equip themselves with digital and entrepreneurial skills in today’s ever-evolving job market.
He urged the students to think beyond traditional employment and consider starting their ventures by taking the path of entrepreneurship.
He also shared practical insights and real-life case studies of media entrepreneurs with success stories, highlighting the significance of innovation, adaptability, and staying current with industry trends.
The Mass Communication students were urged to leverage their academic knowledge and creativity to start unique media-related businesses that can thrive in the digital age.
“Your mobile phone is a powerful device you can use to start a business. There are several simple applications in your phones for video, editing, graphics, writing, photography, social media etc which you can use to generate income for yourselves as undergraduates. Your mindset must begin to change positively,” he stated.
The media expert who shared his success journey of founding a media agency said the Media Clinic initiated by the School’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Nosa, Owens-Ibie, has proven to be a platform for empowering the next generation of media professionals equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in today’s dynamic media landscape.
Notable among those in attendance at the Media Clinic are, Dr Abimbola Olusesi, Director of Brands, Prof. Kehinde Ogunniran Dean of COPAS, Dr. Adetayo Olorunlana, Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Sunday Ogbonna, Dr Ifedolapo Ademosu, among others.
