The International Press Centre (IPC) has concluded plans to train 25 journalists on the use of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act for investigative reports of political campaign finance and COVID-19 accountability issues.
The two-day training to hold in Abuja is planned in partnership with Media Rights Agenda (MRA) and funded through Component 4b: Support to the media of the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Project.
Participants are drawn from investigative reporters, political reporters, state house correspondents and editors from the public and private print, broadcast, and online media to participate in the training holding between Tuesday 22nd September and Wednesday 23rd September.
According to IPC, the thrust of the workshop is to sharpen the investigative skills of participants to be committed in reportage that will enable various stakeholders to use the Freedom of Information Act as a tool to facilitate transparent, free, fair and credible elections and monitor COVID-19 funds.
The expected outcome is to engender interventions that shall sensitise and enlighten more Nigerian citizens on the existence, benefits and the use the FOI Act as well as build the capacity of the media and civil society organisations to effectively use the FOI Act to hold all relevant agencies accountable in elections and the new realities of operating in the pandemic.
IPC is Nigeria’s foremost media capacity development organisation that has enhanced the career of journalists over the years.
