In commemoration of the World Sports Journalists Day, Segun Odunayo pays tributes to top Nigerian sports journalists
Today marks the 23rd year of celebrating Sports Journalists across the world. Sports Journalists report about sporting activities and various happenings in the world of sports.
In Nigeria and other countries across the globe, the advantages of this aspect or field of journalism cannot be over emphasised. The sports journalists report breaking news, research various sports events, analyse and provide all necessary information from the world of sports.
In the past few decades in Nigeria, sports journalists like Mitchel Obi, Ejiro Omonode, Kayode Tijani, Late Felix Okugbe, Godwin Enakhena, Aishat Falode, Bimbo Adeola, Ade Ojekere, Mumuni Alao, and several other top guns in this sector have warmed themselves into the hearts of Nigerians with their wonderful reportage of sports. Very many Nigerians have stayed glued to their television and radio sets to watch or listen to these great professionals or always struggle to get to newspaper stands to buy or catch a glimpse of their wonderful write ups about sports.
In recent years, younger sports journalists have joined the above list to bring glamour to the reporting of sports in the country. Oma Akatugba, Biola Kareem, Miyen Akiri, Olawale Adigun are a few of the young men doing justice to the profession especially on social media.
As we celebrate Sports Journalists today, we hope for more un-biased and excellent reflection of sporting details across the world from these individuals who have dedicated themselves to the profession.
