Here are a few media fellowship and award opportunities with deadlines in September for journalists to take advantage of. Media Career Development Network is happy to assist journalists who reach out for support in achieving their career goals wherever possible.

FELLOWSHIPS

AIJC 2024 Fellowships. Deadline: September 10, 2024

Practising investigative journalists under 30 years in Africa can still apply for a fellowship to attend The African Investigative Journalism Conference (#AIJC2024) at the Wits University in Johannesburg from October 30 to November 1, 2024.

The fellowship will cover major travel costs, including flights, visas, shuttles, accommodation and meals.

Applicants must commit to producing at least one piece of investigative journalism (online, print, or broadcast) inspired by materials gathered at the 2024 conference, to be published no later than three months after its conclusion.

The Radcliffe Fellowship. Deadline September 12, 2024.

The Radcliffe Institute seeks proposals from scientists, writers, journalists, scholars, public intellectuals, practitioners, and artists for its  2025–2026 fellowship.

 Proposals must address pressing social and policy issues and engage audiences beyond academia. The Institute welcomes proposals that focus on women, gender, and society, climate change and its human impacts, and the legacies of slavery.

Applicants must have received their doctorate (or appropriate terminal degree) in the area of their proposed project at least two years before their appointment as fellows 

Fellows will receive a stipend of $78,000 plus an additional $5,000 to cover project expenses.  Interested journalists can apply for the fellowship here

The Cullman Centre 2025-2026 Fellowships. Deadline: September 27, 2024.

Fellowship opportunities are available for 15 outstanding scholars and writers, including academics, independent scholars, journalists, creative writers (novelists, playwrights, poets), translators, and visual artists at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Centre of the New York Public Library.

Foreign nationals conversant in English are welcome to apply. The Cullman Centre seeks top-quality writing and aims to promote dynamic communication about literature and scholarship at the very highest level.

A Cullman Centre Fellow receives a stipend of $85,000, the use of an office with a computer, and full access to the Library’s physical and electronic resources at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street renowned for the extraordinary comprehensiveness of its collections.

The MFWA Digital Public Infrastructure Journalism Fellowship.

In its bid to promote public awareness and participation in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and Digital Public Goods (DPG) issues across West Africa, The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) is accepting applications for its Digital Public Infrastructure Journalism Fellowship Programme.

With funding support and in partnership with Co-Develop, Phase II of the programme will host a cohort of 60 experienced journalists from Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo who will be selected for the three-month fellowship from November 2024 to January 2025.

Aside from acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to produce high-quality, impactful reports on DPI/DPGs fellows will receive a monthly stipend of $250, and partner newsrooms will be supported with $1000.

AWARDS 

Crisp Nigeria (CrispNG) Campus Journalism Award. Deadline: September 5, 2024.

Crisp Nigeria (CrispNG) has announced its second journalism prize for campus journalists, specifically targeting students at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State.

This edition, co-sponsored by Chidi Okoye, a journalist and public affairs analyst, will run from August 5 to September 5, with the winner receiving a cash prize of N10,000 to be announced on September 10.

Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, depth, thematic relevance, and societal impact. Participants are expected to propose a unique story idea, develop it into a specialised report, and submit it for evaluation, focusing on impactful journalism rather than standard breaking news.

Fetisov Journalism Awards (FJA). Deadline: September 15, 2024.

 Professional and freelance journalists from all over the world can submit entries for the Fetisov Journalism Awards (FJA).

The FJA promotes universal human values such as honesty, justice, courage and nobility through the example of outstanding journalists from all over the world.

The first-prize winner will receive 100,000 CHF, while the second and third-prize winners will get 20,000 CHF and 10,000 CHF, respectively.

Publications to be submitted for the Fetisov Journalism Awards contest must have been published between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024.

A maximum of 3 reports or series of reports from one media platform can be nominated for participation in the contest.

Merck Foundation’s Africa Media Recognition Award. Deadline: September 30, 2024. 

African journalists from Southern African, West African, East African, African French-speaking and African Portuguese-speaking countries can submit applications to Merck Foundation’s Africa Media Recognition Awards “More Than a Mother”.

Media representatives and media students are invited to showcase their work to raise awareness about one or more of the following social issues such as: Breaking Infertility Stigma, Supporting Girl Education, Women Empowerment, Ending Child Marriage, Ending FGM, and/or Stopping GBV at all levels.

For each category of print media, online media, radio and multimedia, winners will get $500. However, the selection committee may decide to grant awards to more winners for each category.
